What is Matter?

Matter, initially created by Project Connected Home Over IP (Project Chip) in 2019, is now managed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA), previously known as the Zigbee Alliance. Its official version, Matter 1.0, was launched in November 2022.

It's a single, unified, application-layer connectivity standard served as a solid foundation for secure and seamless communication among diverse devices, ranging from smart bulbs and thermostats to connected appliances and home security systems. Matter operates over existing protocols like Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and Thread. It empowers developers to establish reliable and secure IoT ecosystems, enabling users to connect a variety of brands they prefer. Ultimately, Matter enhances the smart home experience, providing users with the convenience of a more intelligent and interconnected home environment.

Why Matter?

Previously, IoT devices were divided into distinct categories without a universal standard, leading to confusion. Different wireless technologies like Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi further complicated matters. Moreover, third-party smart home products required multiple proprietary apps, causing stress for users and detracting from the smart home experience.

Matter simplifies the smart home experience by ensuring devices work seamlessly together, regardless of their origin. It is an open-source, royalty-free standard compatible with Internet Protocol (IP), Thread, and Wi-Fi networks. Developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance and supported by major companies like Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung..., Matter eliminates the need for individual certifications for different platforms.

With Matter, smart home devices no longer need separate certifications for different platforms. Any Matter device can work with all of them, though some platforms may offer extra features or improved automation, requiring the "Works With" certification.

One of Matter's key features is its ability to enable local device control without an internet connection. While cloud connectivity is optional, it allows remote control and integration with cloud services. By promising interoperability and simplicity, Matter transforms the smart home into a hassle-free and cohesive environment, making it accessible and user-friendly for everyone.
